Drew and I had a great weekend together in Austin.
We had one evening with the stars in our eyes, the "everything couldn't have been more perfect" syndrome, and then, luckily and wonderfully, things went back to the normal day-to-day of the relationship we had while he was living in Austin. We ate SO MUCH good food, spent time with good friends, watched movies we wanted to see; it really was a great weekend. Somehow we managed to take nary a picture of our weekend adventures. Better luck next time.
We spent some time at a couple of different bookstores on Saturday where I got to pick up some novels I've been meaning to get my hands on.
First, Middlesex, written by Jeffrey Eugenides (author of The Virgin Suicides) and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Middlesex is the story of Callie/Cal, a hemaphrodite of Greek origin, and her/his family. It traces the story of the Stephanides family from Mount Olympus to Michigan to Berlin, where Cal lives as an adult.
I got another Pulitzer Prize winning book: Olive Kitteridge. I don't know as much about this book, partly because I haven't started reading it. Also, because I'd never heard of it before Saturday.
The book I'm really the most excited to get into is Let The Right One In. Drew, his roommates and I watched this Swedish movie in July before Drew took the Bar Exam. After watching the creepy-creepy movie, we found out that director Matt Reeves is making an American adaptation called "Let Me In." I read the Wikipedia entry on the book and blabbed enough about wanting to read the book that I probably wore down any resistance Drew had to the idea. He threw in the towel on my incessant yammering, and we've decided to read the book together while I am in Austin and he is in L.A. We already know the ins and outs of the plot, but there were so many questions we had after watching the movie. The book will fill in all the holes. We saw the trailer for "Let Me In," on Sunday, and we were not impressed. It looks like it will be the cutesy version of the Swedish film.
We also saw the trailer for "Never Let Me Go," which is based on the book of the same name. I wasn't altogether impressed the first time I read the book, so I should probably re-read it. I mean, it did get a film adaptation, after all.
I'm very excited that it's my birthday month and am looking forward to visiting my family in two weeks. And, hopefully, another visit with my man in a month. Right now, I've got to finish the chapter I'm on in Middlesex before I can go to bed.
'Night!
